Growing up with a single mother but being fortunate to go to school led me to a firm belief in the need to reach out to our neighbors with arms of compassion & education values. This belief reflects in my involvement with different organizations when I emigrated from Vietnam and chose to live with my relatives in the East Side of San Jose, which struggles with severe socioeconomic challenges. Through my work with elected officials and non-profit organizations such as S.I.R.E.N., and Community Health Partnership, my vision of health and medicine was infused with political advocacy: I found myself as a patient advocate, and made legislative visits to fight for bills that would address loopholes in health coverage to recent immigrants. Recently, through building relationships with doctors, I became more passionate about being a doctor to make a difference in people’s lives. Through SCOPE, as a certified Vietnamese interpreter with SVMC, I am fortunate to help patients overcome the language barrier and serve both patients and physicians’ needs in Vietnamese language and clinical work.
