My goal is to give back to the community in which I live. Specifically, I want to become more involved with the Vietnamese community in San Jose. SCOPE not only provides me the opportunity to serve my community, but it also allows me to explore my interests in medicine. As a Vietnamese interpreter, I bridge the gap between the healthcare workers and the Vietnamese patients by conveying the needs of the patients while being respectful and conscious of cultural differences. Through these interactions with healthcare workers and patients, I hope to gain a better understanding of what is mentally and physically required of me to pursue a career in medicine.
What draws me to becoming a physician is that I would be able to do much more than practice medicine. I could be a liaison between patients and the healthcare system, educating patients on how to reach their health goals and access the services they need. I could also connect with patients by hearing their stories so that I could better understand their situation and assess their mental well-being. Having the opportunity to serve my community as a physician would allow me to tackle social issues while also being a patient advocate.
