From a very young age I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. My parents are a huge inspiration. They met in medical school in Mexico and have been in practice for over 30 years. They both practice in disadvantaged, Latino predominant communities. It is very moving to see what a profound effect they have in the lives of their patients. Growing up in a predominantly Latino area I know the barriers and challenges Latinos face when it comes to healthcare and consider it more effective to take preventative measures than reactive measures. I know I do not fit the profile of a typical underserved Latino, but I want to do what I can to help my community. I feel that it is my duty as someone from Hispanic-descent and future physician. I am confident that volunteering with SCOPE will be a humbling and invaluable experience that will allow me to become a dynamic and well-rounded individual.
