As I have progressed in my pre-medical pursuit I have come to realize that saving a life, or a successful surgery is only a fraction of what medicine is about. The goal of medicine is not to do just enough, so that a patient can be discharged. While it is paramount to resolve any life threatening issues a patient has, the goal of medicine is also to ensure that patients are at ease, and are discharged with the ability and resources to maintain their health. While surgery and the technical side of medicine are vital, it is imperative for a well functioning hospital and healthy society to ensure patients are taken care of beyond their most basic needs.
By being accepted to SCOPE not only will I be able to better understand medicine as a whole, but I will have the unique opportunity to improve patient care beyond its most fundamental form. I look forward to making a positive impact in patients’ lives through SCOPE.
